Prevention is easier than cure
Cracked heels – fissures in the skin – are unpleasant, painful and can bleed in extreme cases. The good news is that you can easily prevent them with regular and proper care.
6 habits that will protect you from cracks
- Daily hydration – Use cream with urea or shea butter. Apply morning and evening.
- Night wraps – Once a week, do a night wrap with rich cream and cotton socks.
- Regular removal of hard skin – Gently remove excess with a file, but don't overdo it.
- Suitable footwear – Shoes should be comfortable, breathable and not too tight. Avoid very high heels.
- Sufficient water intake – Hydration from within is as important as from outside.
- Avoid long standing on hard floors – If you must stand for long periods, do stretching exercises or use mats.
What to do if you already have cracks
Apply healing ointments with panthenol or vitamin E to cracks. If they are deep and painful, see a pedicurist. Severe cracks may require medical attention, especially for diabetics.
