Hard skin on heels is uncomfortable but solvable

Hard skin (hyperkeratosis) forms as a natural protection against pressure and friction. But if it builds up too much, it causes discomfort, cracks and can be painful. Here are 5 effective methods to get rid of it.

1. Regular baths with sea salt or baking soda

Soak your feet for 15 minutes in warm water with 2–3 tablespoons of salt or soda. The water softens the skin, which can then be easily removed with a file. Repeat 2–3 times a week.

2. Quality foot file

After the bath, dry your feet and gently file the heels. Use a double-sided file – coarser side first, then fine. Do not file too intensely to avoid injuring healthy skin.

3. Creams with urea or salicylic acid

These ingredients break down the hard layer. Apply cream to heels every evening and put on socks. Within a few days, the skin will soften and be easily removed.

4. Home wraps with oil

Mix olive, coconut or almond oil with lemon juice. Apply to heels, wrap in plastic wrap and put on socks. Leave overnight.

5. Professional pedicure

If home methods don't work, visit a pedicurist. Professional instrument pedicure removes even very thick hard skin in a single visit.
