Healthy nails are the foundation of beautiful feet

Toenails are often neglected, yet their condition affects not only appearance but also comfort when walking. Ingrown nails, fungus or brittleness can be unpleasant and painful. Here is how to care for nails properly.

Basic rules for cutting nails

  • Cut straight – Never in a curve. Straight cutting prevents ingrown nails.
  • Use quality scissors or clippers – Dull tools crush the nail and can cause splitting.
  • Length – The nail should slightly exceed the fingertip, not too short or too long.
  • Filing – Always file in one direction, not back and forth, to prevent fraying.

Prevention of ingrown nails

  • Do not wear shoes that are too narrow and press on the toes.
  • If you are prone to ingrown nails, cut really straight and gently file the corners.
  • Regularly check whether the nail is cutting into the skin. At the first signs, see a pedicurist.

Treatment and prevention of nail fungus

Nail fungus (onychomycosis) manifests as thickening, discoloration and brittleness. Prevention includes wearing breathable shoes, drying feet thoroughly after showering and using your own towel. If fungus appears, see a doctor – over-the-counter products are not always effective.
